How to Use Open Context

Please Note: Users and contributors to Open Context implicitly agree to abide by the terms and conditions of use.

Click on the "BROWSE Open Context" button above to begin. The Browse page is a good starting point, where you can view the various projects and user tags in the system.

Note: We recommend creating an account so you can create tags and save your searches. To create an account, go to the "Login/Account" button on the toolbar and follow the three simple steps. Please note your browser must accept cookies for this site (www.opencontext.org). A login cookie will last 100 days (so you don't have to login each time you visit).

Here is a brief description of the function of each of the six main buttons on the toolbar:

Login/Account

This button allows you to create a user account. The system will remember you for 100 days so you won't have to manually login each time you visit. Having a user account allows you to save the results of your searches (private tags) or share your search results with other users (public tags).

New Search

The New Search button takes you to the main search page of Open Context. Here, you can enter a word or series of words to search the entire system. The default is a simple search. However, you can also choose to search tags only or to compose an advanced search.

Browse

Clicking on Browse takes you to Open Context's main page, where you can see a list of all the projects and all the tags in the database. You can click on a project or a tag to see an overview of its content.

Selections

The Selections page displays results of your searches. This page offers you various tools to refine your selections, tag items, display summary statistics, and export records to Excel.

Details

The Details page becomes available whenever you click on an item to obtain more detailed information about it. The "Details" tab is a marker to indicate that you are viewing an individual database record. You get to this page by following links from Browse, Selections, or tag-related pages.

My Tags

If you have created tags, this button takes you to your list of Private Tags and Public Tags. From here, you can view, edit, annotate and publish your tags.
